Rich, velvety, and chocolatey. A mocha is an espresso-based beverage, made with steamed milk and luscious cocoa or chocolate. This combination creates a perfect balance of caffeine and cocoa, blended to awaken your taste buds with lots of flavor. This beloved concoction is a variant of a latte and can be made in a variety of ways to suit any coffee-drinker.

Although typically made with espresso, mochas can also be made using strongly brewed coffee.

Mocha Ingredients

There are three core ingredients you’ll need to craft your mocha, but keep in mind your mocha recipe can be altered to suit your preferences.

  • Coffee: Although typically made with espresso, mochas can also be made using strongly brewed coffee. We recommend Folgers® Black Silk Ground Coffee or Folgers Classic Roast Ground Coffee for bold, smooth flavor.
  • Steamed Milk: The amount of steamed milk needed can vary, but it’s typically about equal to the amount of coffee used. You can use any milk you like, whether that’s non-dairy, whole or skim, but note that some milks will steam better than others.
  • Cocoa or Chocolate: Cocoa powder or chocolate syrup is added to give the mocha its chocolate flavor. You can use dark or milk, whichever you prefer.

Some individuals may choose to add additional ingredients, such as sugar or other flavored syrups. Others many choose to top with whipped cream. Whatever you choose to add to your mocha, now is the time to gather those ingredients as well.

How to Make a Mocha at Home

After gathering the needed ingredients, it’s as simple as combining them to create a delicious drink.

  • Prepare a cup of strongly brewed coffee. Use a smaller ratio of coffee-to-water to create a stronger brew. Consider brewing double the typical strength you enjoy, in order to produce a strong-tasting mocha.
  • Steam your chosen milk until it’s hot and frothy.
  • Mix the prepared coffee with cocoa or chocolate syrup. Adjust the amount of chocolate used to achieve your desired level of chocolate flavor.
  • Add additional sugar or syrups, if desired.
  • Pour the steamed milk into the coffee-chocolate mixture and stir.

Mochas can be made in a variety of sizes, from small cups to larger mugs. The balance of coffee, chocolate, and sweetness can also be adjusted to suit your taste.

Tips for Making the Perfect Mocha

  • Start with freshly roasted coffee for the best flavor.
  • Use whole milk for a creamier texture.
  • Heat your chosen milk between 140°F and 150°F for ideal flavor and texture. Use a thermometer to measure the temperature of your milk. It is not recommended to heat your milk above 158°F.
  • Experiment with different levels of coffee-to-chocolate to find your preferred taste.
  • Add sugar or additional syrups, adjusting to preference.
  • Garnish with a sprinkle of cocoa or chocolate shavings for an indulgent touch.

A mocha is more than just a coffee drink. It’s a marriage of bold coffee flavor and decadent chocolate, with velvety steamed milk. It’s a cherished coffee drink that can be customized to suit anybody’s preferences. Whether enjoyed in a bustling café or crafted in the comfort of your own home with Folgers coffee, a mocha is always a delightful choice.
