Ingredients

  • CARAMELIZED ONIONS
  • 2 to 3 tbsps. butter
  • 3 large sweet onions
  • Salt and pepper
  • COFFEE GLAZE
  • 1 tsp. Folgers Classic Roast® Instant Coffee Crystals
  • 1 tsp. water
  • 2 tbsps. Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tbsps. ketchup
  • 2 tsps. firmly packed dark brown sugar
  • PATTY MELT
  • 4 (1/4 lb.) lean ground beef patties
  • 8 slices hearty seeded rye bread
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese
  • 6 tbsps. butter

Directions

  • Step 1

    HEAT 2 tablespoons butter in 12-inch skillet over medium-high heat. Stir in onions. Season with salt and pepper. Reduce heat and cook slowly, stirring occasionally, about 40 minutes or until onions are soft and caramelized, adding more butter if needed.

  • Step 2

    DISSOLVE instant coffee crystals and water in small microwave-safe bowl. Blend in Worcestershire sauce, ketchup and brown sugar to make coffee glaze. Microwave on HIGH 30 seconds or until bubbly. Stir 2 tablespoons coffee glaze into the caramelized onions.

  • Step 3

    SEASON both sides of patties with salt and pepper. Cook slowly in large non-stick skillet over medium heat, turning and basting with coffee glaze until internal temperature reaches 160°F. Coat patties with remaining glaze.

  • Step 4

    TOP each of 4 bread slices with 2 slices of cheese, 1/4 of caramelized onions, hamburger patty and another slice of bread. Spread softened butter over top and bottom of sandwich. Cook in large non-stick skillet over medium heat until golden brown on both sides. Allow sandwiches to rest on cutting board several minutes before cutting in half with serrated knife. Serve immediately.
