The Bautista Family

Juana Bautista’s story is one of relentless work and success. She inherited the farm from her parents, and it was prosperous until leaf rust devastated her crops. Lacking the capital to renovate her entire farm, she had to sell part of it, and has since fought to reestablish her remaining area.

Her daughter, Yasmina, is her right-hand woman, and together they participate in the Better Coffee Harvest Project trainings. With the techniques they have learned—such as how to properly prune old plants and correctly establish seedbeds—they now take better care of their nursery and are vigilant in protecting the small plants, which will guarantee better harvests in the near term.

Before, the men did these activities, but that is no longer necessary. If they are not around, we can do it ourselves.
